Sounds like a typical Sci-Fi synopsis for Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Stepford Wives, or At Worlds End right? Well sure it does, aliens can't abduct the shell of your being and manipulate it like a robot. To the majority of us, this is an outrageous absurdity. Although to a portion of the population imposters of such can be a real thing. Now I am not saying these people all believe aliens or robots are inside of their loved ones controlling everything.
Neurologists believe that the cause of this syndrome is that the wires connected from the Frontal lobe (face recognition) to the amygdala ( located in the limbic system and associated with memories). has been severed during trauma. By severing this, they can recall some things about the individual but not everything. Such as they can remember the face but the emotional connection to that face is not there; they simply do not know how to feel about that person. psychologist have a different idea as to why this is occurring. They believe that the sufferer will block out certain aspects of the person in order to forget. If they have negative thoughts or memories they will simply forget it. Psychologist debate over whether or not this should be categorized as a syndrome or placed in the schizophrenic family.
One of many cases of Capgras Syndrome occurred in 1989 in Missouri at a psychiatric ward. The patient was positive that his step-father was a robot. He was determined to prove to everyone that his step-father was in fact robotic and untrustworthy. In order to prove his theory, he did the only thing he knew and decapitated the man. Despite this vicious act, there were no wires, batteries, or a metallic mechanism inside.
While there are a few medications to help stifle this syndrome, There is no known cure for Capgras.
